Do you ever think about the word “gang”. I looked up the etymology and it’s really quite interesting. Scottish, 500 A.D. But think about all the ways we use it. We’ve got The Gang from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, a family led by Danny Devito as the offbeat father who bets on Asians playing Russian roulette. There’s the 1920s song, “Hail, Hail The Gang’s All Here” sung by the very Harvard boys who yelled “Huzzah!” while tossing around the pigskin. There are the western gangs, which all seem very romantic until one thinks about their horrible dental hygiene.

Then we come to the most macabre use of the word – street gangs. The Crips and Bloods and whoever else is wandering around Atlanta with their jeans falling beneath their asses. This gang is a far cry from the likes of Spanky and Alfafa. How the hell did this happen? I mean, Froggy, Darla and Petey weren’t doing too great financially, as it was the Depression and all. But, you sure as shit didn’t see them shooting out an innocent bartender’s knees after stealing the night deposit.

I’ll stop ranting about Atlanta crime and say what you came to hear me say –shopping; barbecue and The Hills; whores; Kool; Shorty; wine and cheese weekend. God bless the gangs of the U.S.A.
